in honour of mugging for bio core syllabus, which includes the topics of DNA and genomics, genetic variation and diversity and evolution, this post shall be dedicated to my sister also, for all her strange remarks today.

it's saturday, so daniel (her bf) came over for dinner as usual. together with my family we went out to the cafe to eat. surprisingly it was quite crowded today, as compared to other days which we had eaten there.

now before i get to the crux of the entry, i would like to add that having a bf makes one do strange things. like for instance, my sis is ALWAYS bouncing, skipping or hopping around when daniel is around, or tapping her feet on the floor while sitting next to him on the couch. it's amusing to watch yes, but most certainly i hope i do not ever become like that o.O

anyway here goes. halfway through dinner, my mom caught my sis gazing around at the other people around, amongst which were quite a lot of small children and babies.

"eh what are you looking at?"
"trying to see the probability that someone brought a wrong kid home from the hospital"

like zomm, i had never heard such an incredulous answer before. it made me look up from my very exciting diversity and evolution part II notes and shoot her my most bemused expression. top marks for creativity totally.

like, who on earth thinks of such things midway through dinner??

speaking of which, it reminded me of what happened during lunch time today.
for some reason, my sis was staring at my thighs for a couple of seconds before she came to a conclusion.

"eh you are very hairy"

-____- thanks jie. firstly, i do not think i'm very hairy. i'm only normal, it's just that you are hairless.

following which, she carried on,

"i think ma brought home the wrong baby. no wonder we don't look alike."

hahaha SIAO!

and so i retorted

"what makes you think you aren't the wrong baby then?"

"see ma is not hairy, neither is pa, and neither am i."

then i kindly volunteered to educate her on genetic inheritance of recessive alleles. bio rocks.

anyway speaking of sibling genetics, since theoretically we are supposed to have inherited some combination of 2 alleles of 4 alleles for each gene from our parents, our physical appearance shouldn't deviate by that much.

but it happens to be otherwise. thankfully :D (okay here you may think i am very bad to my sis, but hey, its mutual! hahaha)

it still puzzles me why though. i've seen many siblings who bear strong resemblences to each other. tania and her sister, shihui and her sister, timo and his brothers... the list goes on. the kind of siblings whereby one look and you know that they ARE siblings.

hmm. i remember yesterday at pasta mania while waiting for junli, i showed kaixiong my sister's photo in my phone, to which he immediately concurred "ya, don't look alike at all".

we have different eyes, mine with clear double eyelids and hers with hidden double eyelids.
different mouths, mine a wide toothy grin and hers a civilised wenrou mild smile.
different skin colour, she's quite fair and im quite chaotah.
etc etc.

and yes, very different personalities.
she's quite minimalist, doesnt like talking much and steers clear of girly things like ear rings and pink phones.
while im well, quite the opposite. haha.

okay 'nuff's been said. for those who have no idea what im talking about, remind me one day to show you a photo of my sis..you can be the judge. haha.
